Buy your opinion ?? Why should we buy your opinion, Mr. Critic ! Had we gone by your and your word alone, we would have missed the Fight Club or The eyes wide shut and so many other movies which we are really glad to have watched.
First of all, see the many wonderful things that Delhi 6 made us see. The magical camera of Binod Pradhan did much justice to the charisma of the magical city. The specifics and the meticulousness of the direction is also to be much appreciated. I never found a Ramleela so interesting and artistic that I think I watched it without a blink. The way the khaan-paan was put into limelight speaks of the research and passion to bring out the soul of the city. It felt as if the khaan-paan itself was a character which touches the lives of every other character, brings communities together and of course makes the elan vital of Delhi's life.
Yes, 'Delhi 6 is too much to fit in just one movie'. Yes, the 'director seemed to shed light on more than the audience could digest'. But isn't that what Delhi is actually about? Too less space, too many people. Too little opportunities, too many aspirations. Too few resources, too many dreams. Small mohallas, so many houses. Narrow roads, so many cars. Just one city, so many manifestations.
I agree that it would have been greater still if Mehra wouldn't have gone for that supernatural ending and would have kept the movie consistent with everything so realistic otherwise. I think he should have just finished the movie when Abhishek is shot at and left it open ended. Cause Mehra's task pretty much finished at that scene. He had conveyed his message and should have left it to audience to make whatever of it. He did not :-( well, thats OK. Just ignore that small part! Come out of it and look in totality. What I got from that move is so much worth those last five minutes of boredom.
What we should realize is that when a man or a woman is passionate about something, they strive to go deep and deep into it. And when they present it to you, they can't help but try to give u the picture in totality. They just don't want to summarize that journey to you. Cause every bit of that journey was so dear to them. What an intelligent audience should realize is that this was likely to happen. But they should also realize that its only from a work of passion that they can hope to see stuff which is authentic, real and hard to find elsewhere. Rakeysh Mehra had a passion for Delhi. He just missed on being a 100% professional about it. But I give it to him !

Disclaimer: I have not watched Delhi 6! But still being a moody guy with pre-conceived notions about Bollywood and Rakesh Om Prakash Mehara in general, i respond :D
You see, one hand, one can like the movie if it has mere 2 mins of brilliance, a nice shot, a nice angle, some creativity. One can be a big fan of that movie but one must not come forward and say that the movie is so good.
To give an example, remember Saif Ali Khan's dark comedy - "Being Cyrus" with that scene when bulb is shown to Naseer bhai, that aha moment. A brilliant scene but that doesnt mean that the movie is good.
Similarly, coming back to your review, and for my sake since i have not seen delhi 6, i substitute it with my closest approximation - Life in a metro and i see that your points are valid there as well.
Too much to fit in a movie, one city, many manifestations, missing being 100% professional etc. Mind you, Life in a metro had beautiful music and kaykay (for which i have watched that movie again) but that doesnt qualify that the movie is good.
Judging by your review, you would encourage us to see all Johar movies as there is so much wonderful things but not all things are there to be seen.
Btw, who is the critic here? Me?
Argument for the sake of it :)))
hmmm... whatever you have written or pointed out about the movie everyone liked anyways... but the entire issue is how it was put across... it was too haphazard and unconnected... i personally loved the camera work myself, even the ramayan concept was great.. but somehow something prevented me to be really happy with the movie, maybe i expected a lot more or the last '5 minutes' of sheer wastage of screen time spoilt the image... i was satisfied with the movie but not happy..
ha ha .. i loved all your comments !!
@Batra, u weren't being targetted as 'critic'. I guess with ur recos only I saw the fight club etc. In general, I read that Delhi6 got mixed reviews and also there were some outcries from some frnds. Many liked it though!!
Anyways, coming to the point :). I recommend it not because there were one or two good points and all the rest crap. But because there were just 1-2 disppointments and all the rest good. Hence, I wud certainly not recomment all karan johar movies!
@anubha, introspect :)
is not liking Delhi6 just an infection ?
well i dont think 'not liking' delhi 6 is an infection!!! though i laughed aloud at the idea of it being so... :)well first of all, the infective agent is not 'all bad' here, it has sum gud aspects which all dilliwalahs wud uniformly like... and we are talking abt the mature movie goers here and not the ones who say the movie is bad or feel its bad just coz others or max say so.. if thats wat u mean by calling it an 'infection'.. i judged the movie wid a very unbiased n independent eye and i sincerely feel it could hv bn handled better...
another reason why its not an infection - u dont come down wid any life threatening or otherwise disease by 'not liking' dilli 6.. :) just kidding... but still believe the movie could be better!!! :)
nice post......most of the ppl didn't like delhi-6...and i guess ur post explains that very well....
u rightly said that when something generates out of passion, it reaches a level where it's hard for normal junta to understand or rather more importantly appreciate the view of director.
anyways that's how it always has been...nobody cared about ghalib during his lifetime
i wish ramlila scenes could have got more footage...they were brilliantly shot
thanks Sandeep !
